Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to cut a hedge?

Late summer for most, and a light tidy in spring. We avoid March to August where there is any sign of nesting: it is illegal to disturb an active nest, and we would rather come back than risk it.

The conifers have got huge, can they be brought down?

Usually, but carefully. Conifers do not regrow from brown wood, so taking too much at once leaves you with a permanent bare patch. We reduce over two seasons where that is the risk.

Do you take the cuttings away?

Yes, always, and it is in the quote. A long boundary hedge produces far more than people expect and leaving it stacked is not finishing the job.

Can an old privet hedge be cut back hard?

Yes. Privet and hawthorn recover well from hard pruning, ideally one side in one year and the other side the next. It looks bare for a season and then fills in thicker than before.

How often should a hedge be cut?

Most garden hedges look best trimmed once or twice a year, usually in late summer and again in autumn. Fast growers such as privet may need an extra cut in a wet summer.

A hedge that has got away from you is a different job from one that is kept, and it is worth saying which you have on the phone. The long boundary hedges on the Kirkby estates are usually the ones that have been left a season too long.

Hedges are cut level off a line rather than by eye, and tapered slightly so the bottom keeps its light and does not go bare. A hedge that has been cut straight-sided for years is usually why the base has thinned out.

The long boundary hedges on the Kirkby estates produce far more waste than people expect. It is raked, bagged and taken away, and we will not cut anything with an active nest in it.

The older estates in Kirkby were planted with privet and hawthorn along the front boundaries, and many of those hedges are now fifty years old and far wider than intended. A hedge like that can usually be brought back in stages, cutting one side hard one year and the other the next, so it recovers without dying back.

01

Cut level and shaped

Line run along the top so it is actually straight, sides tapered slightly so the bottom keeps its light.

02

Reductions and reshaping

A hedge that has got away can usually be brought back over two seasons rather than taken out.

03

Everything cleared

Cuttings raked, bagged and taken away. The job is not done until the path is clear.

04

Nesting season respected

We will not cut a hedge with an active nest in it. That is the law as well as the right thing.

05

Old hedges renovated in stages

Overgrown privet and hawthorn cut back one side at a time over two seasons, so the hedge thickens again instead of going bare.
